L’Hospital del Coll de Balaguer – Visitation Centre
For centuries, the Coll de Balaguer and its plateau have been a region of strategic priority; an obligatory and difficult passage over the ridge (Coll) on route between Tarragona and Tortosa.
The Gothic hospital of L’Hospitalet de l’Infant was officially founded in the year 1344 by Prince Peter of Aragon and Anjou. A truly unique structure: the majesty of its strict and monumental architecture, its custodial nature as an expression of the thriving Christian spirituality of the era and the military and political determination to control, defend, populate and govern what was until then, an inhospitable territory. This monument is an official Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN).
If you would like to discover the Hospital’s history, we recommend its visitation centre. You will discover many surprising facts about this medieval establishment.
On the ground floor, an audiovisual exhibit and a large model take you on a historic journey around the territory of the Hospital and explain the location’s strategic value.
On the first floor, several features detail the origin of medieval hospitals and the unique history of this one. An audiovisual exhibit recreates different scenes that would have taken place at this monument: from attacks by pirates to the archaeological excavations and their surprising discoveries.
Don’t miss the path upon the surrounding wall on the southwest and north towers! They offer truly marvellous panoramic views of the surrounding area.
